Dear Reader,
This is the last in our three-part series on distance. Moving from close up to middle ground, we now arrive at the long view, widening our frame to incorporate the depth and scope of a particular scape. Opening up our perspective we can expand into glorious vistas that remind us of the grandeur of this world of ours.
Distance makes a difference
The long view gives context, putting a subject in a setting and providing a lot of detailed information. Deep space creates an expansive and open feeling.
Middle ground moves in on the subject, making it the obvious center of interest that dominates the picture.
Close up zeros right in on the subject, eliminating most or all of the background. Positive/negative space adds new compositional interest. And getting so close to the subject creates a feeling of intimacy.

No matter your perspective, a knowledge of lenses is indispensable. This workshop is a survey of the range of lenses available: telephoto, normal, wide angle and fisheye. We will go over how to determine which lens to choose for your specific needs, with special emphasis on the magic of wide angle.

Not a photo but....
this detail of the painting "St. Francis in the Desert" by Bellini (1430 - 1516) is a very early example of the Rennaisance appreciation for the idea of deep space and a grand vista as an ingredient of a work of art. The use of layers as a compositional tool is something today's photographers continue.

These are very friendly, relaxed get-togethers in our apartment in Havertown. (Please note: this is a new location - be sure to RSVP to get address and directions) Photographers of all levels are welcome to share pictures, get photography tips, and discuss camera equipment. You can also get ideas for entering photography contests, submitting to photography magazines and having photo shows. Feedback from the group provides encouragement and inspiration to go out and take more pictures. These informal photography critiques offer an excellent opportunity to start identifying themes in your work and to get ideas for new directions. Group size is limited, so if you can come an RSVP is required by email or call (610) 626-7854. Cost is $10.
