Here we remain, many of us still mostly staying home, keeping our distance, wondering when "normal" will return.  It's easy to get discouraged... but our theme this month is "Take a look around".  Let's  remind ourselves there's still a big world out there.  Nature goes on, bugs, plants, clouds, storms - they've never heard the word "pandemic" and go on their magical, beautiful ways without a thought. City streets, street lights, buildings, buses, train stations, pedestrians also continue on.  So, you have a camera - get out there, take a look around and celebrate the intrigue and beauty you see.   Right?

September Two-Part Photo Workshops

Photo Diaries

Sundays  7:00 - 8:30  9/13 and 9/20

This workshop is designed to structure and encourage your  "looking around".  I love the concept of the photo diary, where the focus is on developing a habit of consistent picture-taking without the stress of having to get that well-considered, perfect shot each time.  Instead, the idea is to shoot daily, documenting the unique look and feel of your own life.  Expand your subject matter to include the mundane as well as the elevated.  Or should we say, elevate the mundane to a new level?  Food, pets, family, the unmade bed, the view out the window, dishes in the sink, your garden, a walk around the block ...all fair game for the photo diary.

First session:  look at how well-known photographers have approached this challenge and discuss ideas we can try ourselves.

Second session: share work from the intervening week.

First session: discussion and practical suggestions

Second session: a check-in for sharing your progress, follow up questions etc.

September Photo Field Trip

Stoneleigh Park: A Natural Garden

It may not be Downton Abby, but you'll discover an impressive mansion dominating lovely grounds.  You'll love the European feel of this  Mainline "palace".   The gardens feature native plants and wildflowers and make a beautiful background for outdoor people shots too .

Photographer of the Month

Tom Shen

Here's what Tom has to say: Ever since the first time I took a photo using a DSLR, I have always wanted to be able to do photography. A few years back, I was able to acquire an old school film camera. Although film was quite obsolete during that time, I was still able to have fun fiddling with the camera. Two years ago, I was finally able to own a DSLR and start experimenting with photography. Over the course of the past years, I was able to learn from various photographers including Mr Biddle. Looking to the future, I wish to continue to enjoy photography and experiment with more styles of photography.

Getting to know Tom (albeit via Zoom) has been, for me,  one of those rare treats that many of us have discovered over the past few months.  As his pictures below show, he has a sophisticated eye and a knack for capturing the graphic,  not often seen in a photographer of high school age.  Tom's interests in photography are wide ranging - including his  fascination with film - and his dedication to the craft is obvious from the number of images he shoots, even with his busy schedule.  We can all learn a lot from Tom about staying open and "taking a look around" with camera in hand! You will enjoy seeing some of what he has been up to.
