March Photo Newsletter

There are Places....

This month we pause to consider the places we live, work and play.

March Workshop

Two-Part Photo Workshop

 Portrait of Our Town

Wednesdays,  7:00 - 8:30  3/18,  3/25

This workshop combines a survey of master photographers' portraits of their "towns" with an assignment designed to get you out capturing your own spaces.

While we are so used to communicating through words, photography is a wordless but powerful way to tell about a certain place and a particular point in time.    People, styles, clothes, even buildings change constantly. This is an opportunity to document things as they are at this moment. This workshop will get you looking at places, people and activities that we all take for granted, but become strong images when captured in photographs.

The first session will be a look at the work of a number of photographers as well as technical and equipment tips.

The second session will be a chance for you to show your work from the intervening week.

March Photo Field Trips

Naval Yard

Sunday, March 29  1:00 - 3:00

A brand new trip to capture the moody atmosphere of  part of our country's history, juxtaposed with modern commercial development. Special treat:  This trip will be co-lead by Mark Ferguson, one of our most popular local photographers who has an infectious enthusiasm for taking pictures of under-appreciated photo destinations in Philadelphia.

30th Street Station

Monday,  March 23  10:00 - 12:00

This Philadelphia site is so familiar  and utilitarian, it is often overlooked for its photographic possibilities.  But we will explore  the grand architecture, indoor markets, the tracks, wires, trains coming and going and views of the city from the platforms.  Our approach will go beyond showing a "beautiful building", and aim to document the interplay between man and the environment in this transportation hub.  (Also a great place to capture people going about their everyday lives.)

Upcoming Photo Salon

Sunday 3:00 4:30   March 22

These are very friendly, relaxed get-togethers at my apartment in Lansdowne. Photographers of all levels are welcome to share pictures, get photography tips, and discuss camera equipment. You can also get ideas for entering photography contests, submitting to photography magazines and having photo shows. Feedback from the group provides encouragement and inspiration to go out and take more pictures. These informal photography critiques offer an excellent opportunity to start identifying themes in your work and to get ideas for new directions. Group size is limited, so if you can come an RSVP is required by email or call (610) 626-7854. Cost is $10.  These Salons often fill-up,

so it's best to get your spot early

Photographers of the Month

Carol Helduser and Steven Phillips

From Painting With Light Workshop

Last month was the Paining With Light Workshop and we're excited to share with you some of the results.  The photographers took on the challenge of capturing images in a dark environment. The light was produced by moving the beam of a flashlight over the subject.  This technique allows for amazing control of shadows, highlights and color.  Check out this sample of some stunningly original and beautiful images.  Thank you to Carol and Steve, who are both favorite members of our photo community!

Here's what Carol has to say:

"I received my first SLR camera in 2003 and took my first Photography class with Owen the following year. Owen has been a wonderful teacher and mentor to me for many years. He continually offers new and interesting classes and workshops which keep me motivated to continue learning. Photography has become a lifelong hobby for me."

And here's what Steve has to say:

"Mostly what I have been shooting since College (and that was a long time ago) was B & W until I was the first person I knew that started shooting digital. It was Owen that sold me that camera. And it's been him who has taught me what I know today. Thank you Owen for all you do."
