As part of our June celebration, we celebrate children and babies with some BYOK (Bring-Your-Own-Kid) events. See photo workshop and field trips for lots of opportunities to learn about photographing the little ones.

Three-Session Photo Workshop
Thursdays 10:00 - 11:30 6/13, 6/20, 6/27
There are hundreds of books on how to photograph your child or grandchild, but in this workshop we will hit to the essentials and get you snapping those precious moments with your little ones. Children make the most endearing subject matter on the planet, but you need a minimal understanding of how to use your camera to really capture the joy. After completing this workshop you will be delighted that your pictures look like they were taken by a professional, but even better, since you have access to all those wonderful, natural moments in your child's day. All cameras welcome.

These are very friendly, relaxed get-togethers at my apartment in Lansdowne. Photographers of all levels are welcome to share pictures, get photography tips, and discuss camera equipment. You can also get ideas for entering photography contests, submitting to photography magazines and having photo shows. Feedback from the group provides encouragement and inspiration to go out and take more pictures. These informal photography critiques offer an excellent opportunity to start identifying themes in your work and to get ideas for new directions. Group size is limited, so if you can come an RSVP is required by email or call (610) 626-7854. Cost is $10. These Salons often fill-up,
so it's best to get your spot early!

Here is what Kelly has to say about herself and the work she does with her sister, Brooke:
I have three young boys that keep me busy most of the time! I fell in love with capturing memories of my first son 6 years ago and it just continued on from there. When I bought my first DSLR the Nikon 3200 it was great feeling to own my first professional camera. I wanted to do more with what I began learning in the first years through group lessons and self taught google searches so I began offering my photography services out to other moms I knew. In my home I set up a mini photography studio, not knowing much, but pushed forward with one main confidence and that was loving children. I had a small clientele of family and friends. A few years later, my sister Brooke, joined my small venture and with that I went on to buy my Nikon D750. I realized that with families with multiple children the photography session also needed another hand to deal with the chaos and uncertainty of children's demeanor. I am slowly teaching Brooke the knowledge behind the camera to become a second shooter. And with that, we as a team have had one on one lessons with Owen. It has been a fun experience learning from Owen. We first met at a beautiful garden, then Swathmore college and then delved into exposure and architecture. We recently had a an in-home lesson on studio lighting. The wealth of knowledge Owen has to offer a striving photographer is never ending. Photo Tips for Running a Family Photo Session
1. Time of day - Working with a family on a time for a session can be the most challenging when booking. They will be pushing times based on naps and eating schedules and as the photographer you are pushing for the best time of day due to lighting. Squinting eyes equal bad images. Also dark images make editing difficult.
2. Keeping it Stress free - Every parent has high expectations of their children and what they want from a session. However, as the children begin to loose it and the moms get more stressed it's key for the photographer to keep calm and keep the session rolling. Reward chests of treats are a great incentive to have on hand.
3. Session checklist - Prior to the session have a clear understanding of what the client desires to have captured ie. specific poses with specific family members. As the photographer be sure to know how many people are in the session and ages. Have a clear plan on how you will capture the images they requested plus what you want to capture. It is key to plan the exact spot of the location you are meeting at ie. park or Longwood gardens.
